Moa

Creators: Francis Spencer and Sally Reihana

Supported by: NZ Lottery Funding for Change

Fran and Sally will create a 6-metre sculpture recognising the historic presence of moa in the Waimate area. Installed beside the bike trail at Kapua Swamp, the piece connects visitors with the region’s natural heritage.

The sculpture features a 10mm stainless-steel spine, strengthened with 10mm and 6mm supports, with all structural components verified by a qualified engineer. The moa form will be woven from insect-grade aluminium mesh, creating a ghost-like, translucent silhouette that reflects a species once present here but now extinct.

Designed as an educational landmark, the sculpture will share the story of the moa and its ecological significance.
