The construction of the Waimate Public Hospital started in 1879. Although it was managed by the South Canterbury Hospital Board in 1885, local committees, elected by the community and allowed by the Fifth Schedule in the NZ Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act, kept some control until it closed in 1996.
